The Training of Engineers Management Indicators in Design and Development ABOUT THE AUTHOR Dr. Hitoshi Kume, graduated from the Department of Applied Chemistry at the University of Tokyo, and received his Doctorate in Engineering in 1965, when he was just 28.  Even a a graduate student, he carried out studies in quality management with managers and engineers in several Japanese factories under the guidance of Dr. Kaoru Ishikawa.  He succeeded Dr. Ishikawa at the University of Tokyo as a full-fledged Professor from 1980 to 1997. Dr. Kume received the Deming Prize for individuals in 1989 for his outstanding contribution to quality control.  In his long and illustrious career spanning over four decades as a consultant in the area of quality improvement, he has advised many manufacturing companies in Japan and other countries, dealing in a wide range of products such as cosmetics, chemicals, metals, semiconductors, electric parts and assemblies, instrumentation, optical apparatus, construction machinery, automobiles, iron and steel, civil engineering, etc. Dr. Kume served as the Chairman, Deming Application Prize Subcommittee, and is presently Professor Emeritus at the University of Tokyo, in addition to having served in various capacities in several  organizations promoting quality.  He has served as Chairman of Japanese Society for Quality Control in 1994 and 1995.  He led the Japanese delegation to ISO/TC/176 (Quality Assurance and Quality Management) from 1982 to 2000.  He is an examiner for the Japan Quality Medal. As a member of the Deming Application Prize Subcommittee, he has been on the examining board for many Japanese and international companies including Sundaram Clayton (Brakes Division) and Mahindra & Mahindra (Farm Equipment Sector). Dr. Kume has written several articles and books in Japanese and English.  His book Statistical Methods for Quality Control which has received worldwide acclaim and his book, Management By Quality are published by Productivity Press in India.
